Who We Are
The Milford Anti-Hate Task Force is a grass-roots group of individuals who have come together to address issues of prejudice in Milford. We are diverse in terms of our backgrounds, religions, ages, ethnicities and sexual orientations, but we are united in our commitment to these goals:
- To reduce prejudice in Milford and eliminate discrimination.
- To promote policies that foster mutual understanding and peaceful relationships between all people of Milford.
- To educate and increase awareness in ourselves and others around issues of prejudice.
- To provide support and friendship for victims of hatred.
- To be a watchdog for hatred and prejudice in our community and to share information with one another about incidents and resources.
- To inspire and support ourselves and others to move through study and action.
Brief History
The Milford Anti-Hate Force was founded in 1999 in response to the appearance of Ku Klux Klan recruitment and a racial incident between two neighbors. The Task Force began its work with a number of Study Circles—small groups with facilitators coming together to discuss racism and responses to it.
The Task Force has also twice organized the Celebration of American Diversity – a multicultural Arts Festival open to all people.
It has also sponsored speakers and other educational and community response events. It purchased copies of “Not in Our Town” and Not in Our Town II” for public library and has sponsored viewings and discussions of the films.
The Task Force has also undertaken a Declaration of Tolerance drive.
